Becothings wins the 2009 HSBC Start-Up Stars Green Awards!

2009 HSBC Start-Up Stars Green AwardIt may be a little potty, but it’s an idea that has helped us become the UK’s best Green Start-Up Business of the year. Our compostable Becopotties, along with our Becohangers and Becobowls, have once again put Becothings on the map as being one of the UK’s leading eco-friendly companies.

Since we launched in May 2007 we have been designing, developing and manufacturing everyday eco-friendly products. Our products are not only environmentally sound but also affordable, practical and fun. Most importantly, they don’t cost the earth. Check out www.becothings.com

The HSBC Start-Up Stars Awards is the UK’s premier showcase for the most promising start-up businesses and the inspirational entrepreneurs behind them. Stars from the business world, including Duncan Bannatyne from BBC TV’s Dragon’s Den attended the black-tie gala dinner held at London’s InterContinental Hotel, where we were presented with our award.

Director, Business Relations, The Carbon Trust, Andy Togher, said of the awards: “This years Start-Up Stars Awards show an increasing number of Britain’s small new businesses taking to heart the issues of climate change and placing them at the core of their marketing objectives. This is not only good for the planet, but also for profits as more and more informed consumers seek out products and services with green credentials. We wish Becothings every possible success for the future.”

This is the third year that a Green Award has been included as part of the HSBC Start-Up Stars Awards. It recognises the increasing number of companies who are basing their businesses around conservation and care, not excess and waste. Head of Business Banking for HSBC, Huw Morgan hopes that companies such as these will lead the way towards a new, greener economy;

“Becothings is an outstanding example and hopefully its success will inspire other young businesses to ask themselves what else they can do to preserve our environment and protect our future.” Lord Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business, who also attended the Awards, said: “The HSBC Start-Up Stars represent the very best in British enterprise. Defying some of the toughest economic conditions for decades, these companies are succeeding in sectors across our economy and markets across the world.

“The dynamism, innovation and hard work of Small to Medium Enterprises like this, is what will power Britain’s recovery now and growth in the future, and Government is committed to ensuring they have the business environment and support they need to prosper.”

“Britain has the entrepreneurial talent to be the most enterprising economy in the world. Awards like the HSBC Start-Up Stars and the British enterprise it celebrates will help us fulfill that potential.”

Following on from winning the Silver at the Mother and Baby Awards, winning the HSBC Start-Up Stars Green Award is another real honour for us. We’d like to say a big thanks to everyone who’s supported us so far!

be [b]eco-beautiful.

a while ago i let you know about all the best eco-fashion brands around. combined with our becohangers, wardrobes across the country have become friendly to all things eco. but, my mission to convert you all into eco-bunnies doesn’t end there…

not only am i a fashion-savvy bunny, i’m also rather beauty-savvy. oh yes, i’m a real all rounder. so now you are fashion forward, it’s time to become beauty brilliant with my review of the best eco-beauty brands around at the moment.

each year we spend hundreds, sometimes thousands, of pounds on beauty products. but a lot of the time it isn’t always clear where the products we are buying come from, what exactly they contain and how they have been tested. beauty product packaging is also a concern, and something which isn’t always possible to recycle. our planet provides us with a plentiful source of all natural and sustainable ingredients and for that deserves to be looked after in return. after all, it’s not only us who should get to look as stunning as possible!

it is worth bearing in mind that products containing chemicals which harm the environment are also likely to be harming your skin. this is why eco-friendly beauty is not only beneficial to the environment, but beneficial to you. everyone has their favourite beauty buys, but from now on, try and do a bit of research into your favourite brands and products. do they test products on animals? do they use ingradients from a sustainable source? do they contain harmful chemicals? can the packaging and any un-used product be recycled or disposed of without posing a threat to the environment? if that all seems a bit daunting, no need to abandon your beloved shade of lippy just yet… i have done a bit of research for you and found some of the best eco-friendly beauty brands:

green people [www.greenpeople.co.uk]: here you can buy everything from skincare to toothpaste and health supllements. a real one stop beauty shop!

lush [www.lush.co.uk]: also available in stores, these freah handmade cosmentics will leave you and the environment smiling.

essential care [www.essential-care.co.uk]: the first brand to develop and organic certified shampoo, the site also has lots of lovely essential oils.

so organic [www.soorganic.com]: this great site is a beauty bible for all things organic. choose from a range of brands and products, including vegan alternatives.

dr hauschka [www.drhauschka.co.uk]: a firm favourite with celebs, this world renound brand focuses of being ethically and socially responsible.

florame [www.florame.co.uk]: a great range of certified organic perfumes and stress busting aromatherapy oils, perfect for relaxing to whilst pampering youself.

puresha [www.puresha.com]: another site carrying a great range of eco brands popular with celebs. you can also search products using criteria such as ‘vegan’ and ‘carbon neutral’.

the body shop [www.thebodyshop.co.uk]: one of the leaders in eco beauty, the body shop has a fantastic make-up range for all skin tones.

when it comes to disposing of your beauty buys, make sure you do so in a responsible way. never flush any products… even 100% organic products can have a negative effect of the delicate pH balance of the water table. in industrialised nations our consumerism and personal habits are now the primary sources of contamination of fresh and ocean water. if your products are not biodegradable, the best solution is to decant all unwanted toiletries into a single container and place it in your normal rubbish. purchasing products from eco-friendly brands, like those listed above, will greatly reduce the negative imapct on the environment as their products are designed to be recycled and bio-degradable.

now you know that beauty products aren’t just skin deep, you can become a beco-babe with the best eco-friendly beauty buys out there. who needs gok wan when you have me?!

becohangers deserve eco fashion.

Natalie the Bunny

as any fashion savvy bunny knows, eco hangers as nice as the becothings range deserve equally pretty and eco friendly clothes.

it’s not always easy to find out whether the clothes you buy in stores come from sustainable and fair trade sources, so i have put on my sexy secretary glasses and done a bit of research to find the best planet saving fashion out there…

fashion conscience is a great site for all things fashion and eco related: www.fashion-conscience.com. not only can you buy online, but you can also pick up tips on the latest trends and labels.

some of my favourite eco labels are…

rani jones: www.ranijones.com

enamore: www.enamore.co.uk

ciel: www.cielshop.co.uk

miksa: www.miksa.co.uk

all are dedicated to sourcing sustainable and environmentally sound clothing that is still at the forefront of fashion. plus, they are very flattering on bunny ears…

finally, to go with your amazing new eco friendly clothes, what better than vintage recycled bags and accessories? check out poppy valentine [www.poppyvalentine.com] and matt&nat [www.mattandnat.co.uk] for planet saving prettiness.

just make sure you remember to stock up on our becohangers to hang everything on!

John Lewis and JoJo Maman Bébé stock Eco-friendly Hanger

I just wanted to give everybody a quick update on the latest sales of our eco-friendly hangers, the Becohanger.

John Lewis have been stocking the Becohangers since late november and the sales have been strong. Supplying John Lewis was a real buzz for us and seeing the complete range of 12 different design nationwide really showed that Becothings is taking off! At the moment the full range is available in the Haberdashery department, but in some stores they can also be found within the main hanger selection. We are hoping that John Lewis will launch the product online sometime in the new year.

Recently JoJo Mama Bebe also came on board as a Becothings stockist and have added 3 of our children’s hanger designs to there catalogue and online store. We have not had a full sales report yet but I heard a rumour that the Teddies were easily the best selling design!
