Becothings wins the 2009 HSBC Start-Up Stars Green Awards!

2009 HSBC Start-Up Stars Green AwardIt may be a little potty, but it’s an idea that has helped us become the UK’s best Green Start-Up Business of the year. Our compostable Becopotties, along with our Becohangers and Becobowls, have once again put Becothings on the map as being one of the UK’s leading eco-friendly companies.

Since we launched in May 2007 we have been designing, developing and manufacturing everyday eco-friendly products. Our products are not only environmentally sound but also affordable, practical and fun. Most importantly, they don’t cost the earth. Check out

The HSBC Start-Up Stars Awards is the UK’s premier showcase for the most promising start-up businesses and the inspirational entrepreneurs behind them. Stars from the business world, including Duncan Bannatyne from BBC TV’s Dragon’s Den attended the black-tie gala dinner held at London’s InterContinental Hotel, where we were presented with our award.

Director, Business Relations, The Carbon Trust, Andy Togher, said of the awards: “This years Start-Up Stars Awards show an increasing number of Britain’s small new businesses taking to heart the issues of climate change and placing them at the core of their marketing objectives. This is not only good for the planet, but also for profits as more and more informed consumers seek out products and services with green credentials. We wish Becothings every possible success for the future.”

This is the third year that a Green Award has been included as part of the HSBC Start-Up Stars Awards. It recognises the increasing number of companies who are basing their businesses around conservation and care, not excess and waste. Head of Business Banking for HSBC, Huw Morgan hopes that companies such as these will lead the way towards a new, greener economy;

“Becothings is an outstanding example and hopefully its success will inspire other young businesses to ask themselves what else they can do to preserve our environment and protect our future.” Lord Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business, who also attended the Awards, said: “The HSBC Start-Up Stars represent the very best in British enterprise. Defying some of the toughest economic conditions for decades, these companies are succeeding in sectors across our economy and markets across the world.

“The dynamism, innovation and hard work of Small to Medium Enterprises like this, is what will power Britain’s recovery now and growth in the future, and Government is committed to ensuring they have the business environment and support they need to prosper.”

“Britain has the entrepreneurial talent to be the most enterprising economy in the world. Awards like the HSBC Start-Up Stars and the British enterprise it celebrates will help us fulfill that potential.”

Following on from winning the Silver at the Mother and Baby Awards, winning the HSBC Start-Up Stars Green Award is another real honour for us. We’d like to say a big thanks to everyone who’s supported us so far!

BecoPotty Wins Silver at Mother & Baby Awards

Mother and Baby Awards - Best New Innovation 2009

Well we have done it again! Everybody in the office is thrilled to announce the Becopotty won the Silver award in the Best New Innovation category at the annual Mother & Baby Awards.

Now in their 17th year, the M&B Awards are the Oscars of the nursery industry and the most trusted brand approval mark for consumers.

The Becopotty is the first eco-friendly alternative to the common plastic potty. Made from rice husks, a waste product of rice farming, the Becopotty is highly sustainable and completely biodegradable when finished with. Totally unique to the market, the Becopotty works in exactly same way as a traditional potty and can be used right through potty training. When finished with the Becopotty can be buried in the garden compost or left for landfill. Here it will slowly start to break down and over the next 3-5 years biodegrade.

Just being shortlisted was a major success for a small company like us – so it was a massive surprise to go home with the Silver. Approximately 17 million potties go to landfill every year worldwide, where they take 100’s of years to breakdown. The Becopotty solves a really big problem and we believe our products could make a really positive environmental impact.

BecoBowl wins Glee Awards 09 – Bests New Pet Product

Here at Becothings we are very excited to announce that our new BecoBowl has scooped the award for best new pet product at the 2009 Glee Petindex New Product awards! We were presented with the award at the inaugural Pet Industry Awards dinner (Sunday 20th September), which was sponsored by Nestle Purina and Mars, and organised by the Pet Care Trust.

Following a rigorous judging process during Sunday’s Glee Petindex, the shortlisted entries for the Glee Petindex New Product Awards were chosen by Martin Smart, publisher of and Steve Fowler, director of Pampurred Pets.  Drawing from a shortlist of three, the winning products stood out from the crowd thanks to their unique design, retail appeal and competitive pricing.

The BecoBowl is the world’s first eco-friendly alternative to the common pet bowl. Made from rice husks, a product of rice farming, the BecoBowl is highly sustainable to produce as well as being fully biodegradable when thrown away. With a life expectancy of 5 – 10 years, the BecoBowl works in just the same way as a regular bowl for your dog or cat. It can even be cleaned in the dishwasher. Once finished with, the BecoBowl can either be sent to landfill or added to the compost heap. Depending on the conditions, the bowl will disintegrate in 2 – 3 years.
What the judges said: “The Becobowl is the first bio-degradable food bowl to reach the market.  Made from plant fibre material, the product offers green credentials and a unique alternative to the traditional bowls on the market.  Superb!”

The prices for the bowls range from RRP £2.99 (small) to RRP £4.99 (large), with colours in Natural, Brown, Blue, Green and Pink. The BecoBowl can be purchased from any Pets Corner store in the UK –

happy birthday angus the dog!

today is a special day in the beco office… not only is it world earth day, it is also angus the dog’s birthday! to celebrate we’ve got him a rather fancy cake… though we couldn’t quite fit all 180 candles on… plus that many candles make for a bit of a fire hazard in an office full of cardboard hangers! tonight we will be having a good old shindig in the jungle. i’m hoping the teddy will behave himself and that angus the dog doesn’t make his famous vodka melons… i can assure you from experience that they are definitely not bunny friendly!

if you want to send the dog a present i’m sure he’d appreciate a becobowl or two… and he is rather partial to eco-friendly doggy treats!

New Stockists of the Becopotty!

Since the Harrogate show, Toby the Teddy has been very busy taking orders for the Becopotty  – the eco friendly potty- great for us, but not so good for the normal plastic potty manufacturers!  Things are looking up for environment though, once our potties have been used by by all those toddlers out there they will either be composted outside or put in to landfill.  In both cases they will biodegrade quickly and wont leach any horrible poisons into the earth because they’re made out of rice husk and bamboo…Unlike those smelly pvc potties!

Cardboard hangers make great safety hangers for hospitals

Toby the TeddyCardboard hangers are not just for eco warriors and ethically minded shoppers. Since the launch of our folded cardboard hangers last year Becothings has seen a growing demand for Becohangers from healthcare professionals. Cardboard hangers have proved the ideal solution for NHS hospitals and mental health trusts looking for safe, functional and durable coat hangers.

The folded cardboard becohanger is perfect for organisations looking for anti-ligature hangers. Unlike plastic hangers, which simply break under stress forming sharp dangerous shards, becohangers collapse and prevent the user causing any damage to themselves or anybody else.

Recent trusts and organisations to start using Becohangers include South Staffordshire & Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and The National Autistic Society (NAS)

be [b]eco-beautiful.

a while ago i let you know about all the best eco-fashion brands around. combined with our becohangers, wardrobes across the country have become friendly to all things eco. but, my mission to convert you all into eco-bunnies doesn’t end there…

not only am i a fashion-savvy bunny, i’m also rather beauty-savvy. oh yes, i’m a real all rounder. so now you are fashion forward, it’s time to become beauty brilliant with my review of the best eco-beauty brands around at the moment.

each year we spend hundreds, sometimes thousands, of pounds on beauty products. but a lot of the time it isn’t always clear where the products we are buying come from, what exactly they contain and how they have been tested. beauty product packaging is also a concern, and something which isn’t always possible to recycle. our planet provides us with a plentiful source of all natural and sustainable ingredients and for that deserves to be looked after in return. after all, it’s not only us who should get to look as stunning as possible!

it is worth bearing in mind that products containing chemicals which harm the environment are also likely to be harming your skin. this is why eco-friendly beauty is not only beneficial to the environment, but beneficial to you. everyone has their favourite beauty buys, but from now on, try and do a bit of research into your favourite brands and products. do they test products on animals? do they use ingradients from a sustainable source? do they contain harmful chemicals? can the packaging and any un-used product be recycled or disposed of without posing a threat to the environment? if that all seems a bit daunting, no need to abandon your beloved shade of lippy just yet… i have done a bit of research for you and found some of the best eco-friendly beauty brands:

green people []: here you can buy everything from skincare to toothpaste and health supllements. a real one stop beauty shop!

lush []: also available in stores, these freah handmade cosmentics will leave you and the environment smiling.

essential care []: the first brand to develop and organic certified shampoo, the site also has lots of lovely essential oils.

so organic []: this great site is a beauty bible for all things organic. choose from a range of brands and products, including vegan alternatives.

dr hauschka []: a firm favourite with celebs, this world renound brand focuses of being ethically and socially responsible.

florame []: a great range of certified organic perfumes and stress busting aromatherapy oils, perfect for relaxing to whilst pampering youself.

puresha []: another site carrying a great range of eco brands popular with celebs. you can also search products using criteria such as ‘vegan’ and ‘carbon neutral’.

the body shop []: one of the leaders in eco beauty, the body shop has a fantastic make-up range for all skin tones.

when it comes to disposing of your beauty buys, make sure you do so in a responsible way. never flush any products… even 100% organic products can have a negative effect of the delicate pH balance of the water table. in industrialised nations our consumerism and personal habits are now the primary sources of contamination of fresh and ocean water. if your products are not biodegradable, the best solution is to decant all unwanted toiletries into a single container and place it in your normal rubbish. purchasing products from eco-friendly brands, like those listed above, will greatly reduce the negative imapct on the environment as their products are designed to be recycled and bio-degradable.

now you know that beauty products aren’t just skin deep, you can become a beco-babe with the best eco-friendly beauty buys out there. who needs gok wan when you have me?!

Organic Pet food in our Eco-friendly Pet Bowl

Toby the TeddySo, this week I thought it would be a good idea to look into organic pet foods for our new Becobowls. After a quick search on google and a few phone calls later I was soon talking to the nice people at Organipets.

As the UKs number one ethical pet food company, Organipets has built up a reputation for the high quality, healthy pet food. All their food is both organic and hypoallergenic.

Key to the success of Organipets has been their commitment to better animal welfare. For example there chicken is not only organic, its free range as well. It also means that their products contain no pesticides, fertilisers, artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

Now I’ve already been down to the local Waitrose and picked up a 12kg bag for Angus the Dog and I think we should have a small bag for James the Cat before the end of the week.

But if you get a second check out:
